Every Halloween, old marketing myths claw their way out of the grave – and this year, it’s Digital PR’s turn to rise from the crypt.

In this transcript of our latest video, Tales from the Digital PR Crypt: Myths That Refuse to Die, Matt takes a spooky stroll through the myths that keep great brands buried, from the “Digital PR is just link building” cliché to the haunting idea that only follow links matter.

Matt:
Welcome back to the graveyard – or rather, The Digital PR Crypt.

This time, we’re digging up the myths that keep great brands buried.

And trust me, these myths have been around longer than your highest Snake score on a Nokia 3310.

Let’s open a few coffins, shall we?

Myth number one:
“Digital PR is just link building.”

That one’s as dead as they come.

Sure, backlinks should be the outcome, but Digital PR is really about stories that earn attention, awareness, and build brand authority.

When you get it right, the links supercharge authority and rankings.
When you get it wrong, you end up with a zombie backlink profile that looks alive but has no pulse.

Myth number two:
“The Ghost Links: When coverage appears… but the backlink doesn’t.”

This one’s a true haunting.

You land an amazing piece of coverage, celebrate, then realise there’s no link.
And when you chase the journalist – that’s right, you get ghosted.

It happens. But even without that link, brand mentions build trust, awareness, and authority – and that’s what keeps you visible in AI search.

Myth number three:
“Only follow links matter.”

That’s like thinking the only scary movie worth watching is Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.

Sure, follow links are the gold standard, but no-follow links can still be as impactful.

In trusted spaces, a no-follow link still goes a long way to building your credibility, and studies show the correlation between brand mentions and AI visibility are hauntingly strong.

Now, let’s take a quick walk through the crypt for a few more headstones:

  • “Press releases are dead.” – Only the boring ones.
  • “Journalists don’t cover small brands.” – They do, if you give them a killer angle.
  • “Any link is a good link.” – Tell that to the ghosts of spam campaigns past.
  • “Digital PR and SEO are separate.” – In 2025, they’re the same spell cast two different ways.

So this Halloween, don’t let your brand stay six feet under.
