It’s important to understand which keywords your customers use to visit your website. When you use the specific words and phrases they search for, you’re one step closer to ranking on the first page of Google.

The first step to finding the right keywords for WordPress is to ask your customers. Look at the emails they send you and the web chats you have with them. Alternatively, grab a notebook and jot down the keywords they use when you’re on a call with them.

As an example, let’s say you run a waste disposal service. What you refer to as the local ‘household waste and recycling centre’ in-house, your customers may simply call the ‘tip.’ 

Look at your competition

First, visit the websites of two or three competitors offering the same products and services as you. 

Then, look at the keywords that feature on their pages and see where your rivals rank in the search engines for them. If their site appears on the first page of Google, it’s a keyword you should probably be using too!

For example, let’s say your main keyword is ‘coffee shop in London.’ Related keywords you can optimise for may include ‘new coffee shop in London’ or ‘independent coffee shop in London.’

The easiest way to find LSI keywords is to carry out a search in Google and scroll down to the bottom of the page. You’ll see ‘related searches’ which will provide a new clutch of words to check out.

Alternatively, websites like Answer The Public and Keyword Tool can supply you with the perfect keywords to use on your WordPress site.

Remember to focus on search intent

Search intent is what someone wants to achieve by searching for a specific keyword. Ideally, you want to focus on people who are in a position, or will shortly be in a position, to buy your product or service.

Let’s go back to our good old London-based coffee shop. If someone is searching for ‘best coffee recipe,’ it’s likely that they’re looking to make their own coffee at home. This means it’s a keyword you should avoid spending time trying to rank for.

However, if someone is searching for ‘Independent coffee shop in London,’ then the intent is there, and it’s likely to be a good keyword to try and optimise for.

Nope, we didn’t misspell toast – Yoast is the WordPress plugin of choice for businesses and bloggers across the world. If you want to know how to add SEO keywords to WordPress, Yoast will give you a helping hand.

This plugin lets you optimise your page content to help you correctly use your keyword of choice. 

When adding a keyword to your page, it’s important to make sure you use it enough (but not too much), as well as utilise it in your headings and subheadings.

Yoast also checks for other factors that can affect page SEO, like internal and external links, as well as images and page readability. You then get a green, amber, or red rating to show how optimised your page is.
